The Society Hotel - Then and Now: Lifestyle Hotel Imagery

So stoked to have been with The Society Hotel through their wild ride of transformation.  The Mariner's Building was built in 1881 by the Portland Seamen's Friend Society, to be a boarding house for sailors and keep them away from booze, drugs (good luck) and the infamous Shanghai Tunnels.  In the 60's and 70's the first floor was a Chinese dance hall and in 1990 parts of the hotel were used for the Dennis Quaid movie, "Come see the Paradise."  When renovations began in 2013, the upstairs had not been touched since 1945 and we had the opportunity to use video and still photography to document the time capsule it had become.  So much amazing history in that building and so many artifacts.  More than two years later when they asked us back to photograph what they had renovated, we couldn't have been more pleased or amazed.  The new space is a great mix of old and new, adding a much needed breath of life to the historic Old Town/Chinatown district, while still paying homage to its 134-year history. Not to mention they have created an affordable hotel, complete with hostel-style bunks that boasts one of the best rooftop views in the city.  To read more about the preservation/renovation, see some of our before images and learn about the architecture of the space, Brian Libby has your rundown here.

OnTrak Editorial Cherry Blossom Magazine Cover Shoot

Nothing more spectacular than the Portland Waterfront when the cherry blossoms are out. OnTrak Magazine seemed to agreed and we teamed up with PDX Pedicab to do a little off roading at the park for their cover.  At 8am we just managed to fight our way through the swarm of other photographers also bent on capturing all the pink glory.

Portland's Mississippi District goes full Square

You can find just about anything you would want and nothing you would need on Mississippi Street in Portland.  But New York Times writer Julie Lasky says it so much better than we ever could, "North Mississippi Avenue in Portland delivers a hipster experience as reliably as the rain. The street’s commercial district, which runs five blocks from North Fremont Street up to North Skidmore Street, has coffee-roasting equipment, saltwater aquariums, chandeliers made with recycled wine bottles, jewelry cast from animal sex organs and possibly the best corned beef hash ever fried."   

Thanks to all the businesses that contributed their design sensibilities: Sunlan (who was ironic before it was cool), Mr. Green Beans, Land Gallery, Flutter, Gravy, Paxton Gate, Mississippi Avenue Lofts, Silver Moon Creperie, The Big Egg, Prost!, and The John Palmer House. One thing's for certain, it's not easy being hip, but you do it with aplomb.  And a beard.

A Taste of Portland for Feast Magazine

Did a tour of tasty, tasty places for simply scrumptious Australian Food and Travel Magazine, Feast.  This required some intense research, i.e. eating everything we could get our cameras on.  The adventure included, but was not limited to:

Discover Portland

Me and Ava Gene's restaurant have found ourselves on the cover of the DiscoverPORTLAND Guide.  Doesn't everyone look so dang happy in this picture? My images from Lardo SandwichesOX Restaurant, and The Nines also made the cut of Portland fabulousness. Leading the world to realize we are just a town of non stop eating and drinking.  

Whenever friends visit the first question is, "Where for brunch?" and the second is, "Where for Happy Hour?"  

At least we all have our priorities straight.

Earth, Wind and Fire - Traveling to Idaho for The New York Times

Did you know Idaho was a hot destination spot?  Me neither, but clearly the New York Times, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ernest Hemingway beg to differ.  Challenged with shooting a travel story on wildfires, we hopped a plane, rented a car with a sunroof (always a sunroof) and started cruising.  We hit the "Highway to Heaven" trail, also known as Highway 21, where areas are still scarred by lightning storms which ignited 335 fires in the Boise National Forest over the course of eight days in 1989, eventually burning 46,000 acres of land.  Now new growth mixes with burned remains, creating a visual mosaic. We hit places with backcountry names like Beaver Creek and Big Woods River which we off-roaded through at Sunset, trying to avoid gangs of Elk.  Then after days with no cell reception we touched down in Sun Valley, an oasis that housed Hemingway through the last of his years and now provides skiing, tennis, chocolate shops, and outdoor ice skating to the world weary. But the luxury seemed suspect after days of rolling in black forest fire ash, and once we showered off and imbibed a cocktail or two, we were back on the road.  Next stop was The Wrangler Drive-In to suck down blackberry milkshakes and gape at the Jackalope, a burger not for the timid which weighs in at 2 pounds.  Completing our Idaho loop we paused at The Silver Creek Preserve to quietly stalk the fly fisherman as they did a little stalking of their own, both of us trying not to disturb our prey.  From there it was a straight shot to Boise with the music cranked and the sunroof open as we both admired our tans and picked the tall grass out of our socks.

Food and Wine Magazine - Racion Drinks on the Bar

During a recent trip to Portland's West End Christopher found a unique opportunity to photograph a set of drinks for our friends at Racion to accompany an article in Food and Wine Magazine. Barender Justin Siemer crafted a few amazing cocktails featuring flavored ices that you can make at home. Check out the summer cocktail recipes here.

Pickathon 2014

Spent the first weekend of August how we always do, photographing the amazingness that is Pickathona four-day music festival located on the 80-acre Pendarvis farm in Happy Valley, just about 30 minutes outside of Portland. Now in its 16th year with six, count them...six, different music venues, the festival focuses on sustainability and the best part is they have eliminated single use cups, bottles, dishes and utensils and been plastic free since 2010! 

This year, the New York Times decided to stop by and get in on the West Coast love and being so gracious, we decided to join them.
