Portland's Mississippi District goes full Square

You can find just about anything you would want and nothing you would need on Mississippi Street in Portland.  But New York Times writer Julie Lasky says it so much better than we ever could, "North Mississippi Avenue in Portland delivers a hipster experience as reliably as the rain. The street’s commercial district, which runs five blocks from North Fremont Street up to North Skidmore Street, has coffee-roasting equipment, saltwater aquariums, chandeliers made with recycled wine bottles, jewelry cast from animal sex organs and possibly the best corned beef hash ever fried."

Thanks to all the businesses that contributed their design sensibilities: Sunlan (who was ironic before it was cool), Mr. Green Beans, Land Gallery, Flutter, Gravy, Paxton Gate, Mississippi Avenue Lofts, Silver Moon Creperie, The Big Egg, Prost!, and The John Palmer House. One thing's for certain, it's not easy being hip, but you do it with aplomb.  And a beard.

A Taste of Portland for Feast Magazine

Did a tour of tasty, tasty places for simply scrumptious Australian Food and Travel Magazine, Feast.  This required some intense research, i.e. eating everything we could get our cameras on.  The adventure included, but was not limited to:

Bollywood Theater - Ace Hotel - Portland Saturday Market - Mediterranean Exploration Company - Clay Pigeon Winery - House Spirits - Olympic Provisions - Portland Airport - Tasty n' Alder - Raven and Rose - Pepe Le Moko - Pok Pok - Tidbit Food Farm - Tilt - Yard House - Ace Hotel - Saturday Market

Now go forth and feast.

AARP and the Sandwich Generation

Spent the day with Janet Martinez and family for a story for AARP.  The story is about the "sandwich generation" adults bringing up young children while also overseeing the care of their aging parents.  Janet, a TV producer, was a joy; funny, honest and open about the balancing act of shuttling her daughter and mother through their daily activities.  After shooting she entertained us with a beer and stories of working on Lifetime Channel Movies.

NashCO Travels to the Yukatan

NashCO just got back from a three-week photo adventure where we ate and photographed our way through Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Here's some photos from our trip, jealous much?

Nash and CO Stand In For You

Okay, let's get one thing straight. Nash and CO are a couple of hams. One of the big advantages to working as a team is that when setting up lights and checking locations for portraits we get to take photos of each other ALL THE TIME.  For those of you who don't know, Leah (Nash) is the cute one, and Christopher (CO) is the one who's still working out how to pose for the camera.  So here's a look back at 2013: a year of standing in.

Pickathon 2013

Every August for the past 15 years a magical event called Pickathon takes place just outside of Portland.  Four days of music, camping, beer drinking and general good times spill out onto Pendarvis farm.  Not only is there amazing music at 6 stages tucked all over the woods but it is also the only large outdoor music festival in the United States to eliminate single use dish ware, cups (thanks to Klean Kanteen) and utensils.  Plastic free since 2010 they also compost and use renewable energy.  We were given the official job of photographic 'roamer' which basically means wander around and shoot whatever makes the event cool. See ya there in 2014.

Bikes and Brew for Travel Oregon

NashCO Spent a sunny day chasing down bikes and brews in Portland for Travel Oregon.  Not sure which this town is more obsessed about.  But while contemplating this managed to hit three breweries before the sun went down....Coalition Brewing Co., Hair of the Dog, and Apex Bar with more than 50 beers on tap.  Hey, it's a tough job but someone has to do it.
